SEASONED
THESPIANS PRESENT CRIMES OF THE HEART
AT
CANYON
CREST ACADEMY
December 11 through 18, 2008, the Pulitzer Prize winning tragic comedy Crimes
of the Heart comes to the Black
Box Theatre at Canyon Crest Academy presented by
a cast of seasoned student thespians under the direction of an inspired teaching
artist. The play tells the story of
the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe, and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy's
home in Hazlehurst, Mississippi after Babe shoots her abusive husband. Each
sister has endured her share of hardship and misery, and during this strained
reunion, past resentments come to
the surface and they're forced to deal with assorted relatives and past
relationships and face the consequences of the "crimes of the heart"
each has committed.
Crimes of the Heart features
six very talented CCA students: Nora
King, Cindy Mersten, James Pratt, Eleot Reich, Ryan Sandrew, and Hannah Swenson.
Five of the six actors are members of Canyon Crest’s audition only
Envision Theatre Conservatory, four of whom are in Level Three of the
Conservatory (Seniors.) Four
of the six students have participated in the prestigious audition only La Jolla
Playhouse Summer Conservatory. Two
of the students have won awards from the National Youth Theatre for prior
performances at Canyon Crest, one for two consecutive years.
And one student attended the California State Summer School for the Arts
and received a California Arts Scholar Award.
This talented cast is directed by an exceptional teaching artist, Lisa
Berger, who presently teaches for UCSD, CSU San Marcos, Mira Costa College and
the La Jolla Playhouse, and also worked as a teaching artist for Broadway’s The
Lion King and Footloose.
Ms. Berger has directed plays for Diversionary Theatre,
Compass Theatre, UCSD, and for the Metropolitan Opera Guild's Creating Original
Opera program in NYC, among others. Combine
a Pulitzer prize-winning play with talented students and an amazing director and
you get magic on stage that you don’t want to miss!
