Children’s
Theatre Presents World Premiere Musical “The Christmas Doll”
Children’s
Theatre of Charlotte is proud to celebrate this year’s holiday season with the
world premiere musical “The Christmas Doll” (Nov. 30-Dec. 16), by acclaimed
playwright Joan Cushing. Set in Victorian London with rich storytelling and the
period detail of a Charles Dickens novel, this heart-warming story of hope is
destined to become a holiday classic.
Orphaned
sisters Lucy and Glory flee the bleak public workhouse and try to survive on the
bitter winter streets of Victorian London. Knowing her sister will die if they
cannot find food and shelter, Lucy, the older and stronger of the two, kindles
Glory’s hope and imagination with stories from their happy early childhood.
Inspired by these stories, Glory clings to a dream about a beautiful doll that
will change their lives. When Lucy finds holiday work at a doll shop, it looks
like their dreams may come true, and an act of selfless generosity leads to an
unexpected homecoming.
The
musical is adapted from the book “The Christmas Doll”, written by Elvira
Woodruff. “It is a beautiful story, with rich characters, a great plot and
plenty of humor mixed in with the pain and poverty of the lower classes in
Victorian London,” commented Joan Cushing. “’The Christmas Doll’ shows
how if one concentrates on others and thinks about giving, one actually ends up
getting more.”
According
to TYA Today, Joan Cushing is
“the most produced playwright in children’s theatre.” Her past work
includes the successful musical adaptations of “Miss Nelson Is Missing!” and
“Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business”. Joan Cushing and author
Elvira Woodruff will participate in an audience talkback after the opening night
performance of “The Christmas Doll.”
The
production features a strong lineup of professional actors, including Caroline
Bower, Ben Mackel, Amy Van Looy, Chaz Pofahl,
Mark Sutton
, Nicia Carla, Gina Stewart and Barbi Van Schaick. They are joined by a cast of
15 student actors. The production is directed by Artistic Director
