Children’s
Theatre Presents Final Show of 2008-09 Season “The Commedia Aladdin” and
Preschool Show “Animal Tales”
Children’s
Theatre of Charlotte’s Resident Touring Company, the Tarradiddle Players,
gives a hilarious new twist to the story of Aladdin in the final show of their
2008-09 season, “The Commedia Aladdin”
(May 1-10). Hop on a magic carpet with Aladdin as he summons the
powerful Genie of the Lamp and changes his fortunes forever.
The
story is told in the centuries-old Italian Commedia dell’arte theatre style
that inspired modern day comedians like Abbott and Costello and the Marx
Brothers. Fresh, fast-paced and full of physical humor, Commedia shows are
always faithful to the original tale - but with an added bonus of slapstick
silliness that leaves audiences helpless with laughter.
“The
Commedia Aladdin” stars the 2008-09 Tarradiddle Players company: Darlene
Parker-Black, Ashby Blakely, Leslie Ann Giles and Stephen Seay. In addition to
appearances on Children’s Theatre’s MainStage, this professional four-person
troupe spreads the joy of live theatre across the Southeast. This season, the
Tarradiddle Players will travel from
Virginia
to
South Carolina
, performing in schools, community centers and towns big and small for audiences
who might otherwise never see a live play. Meet the Tarradiddle Players and hear
stories from the road at an audience talkback following the opening night

Children’s
Theatre of Charlotte will delight younger audiences with “Animal
Tales” (Apr. 25-26), a special Tarradiddle production for
preschoolers. Written and directed by former Tarradiddle player Joanna Gerdy,
the show features a variety of animal stories, poems and songs that explore
fables and folk tales from different cultures. Performed in a playful
storytelling style that involves lots of audience interaction, “Animal
Tales” is a wonderful introduction to live theatre.
