Children’s Theatre Presents an Exciting New Production and a Family Favorite for the Holidays
Children’s Theatre of Charlotte celebrates the spirit of the season with two productions, both ideal for family holiday outings. “If You Take a Mouse to the Movies”, in the McColl Family Theatre from Dec. 4-29, is a new, larger-than-life storybook adaptation of Laura Numeroff’s popular holiday-themed tale. “’Tis the Season”, in the Wachovia Playhouse from Dec. 11-23, is a charming collection of seasonal stories from around the world, performed by the Tarradiddle Players.
If You Take a Mouse to the Movies
Children’s Theatre of Charlotte presents a fresh new story for the holiday season, with the regional premiere of Laura Joffe Numeroff’s holiday-themed tale “If You Take a Mouse to the Movies”. This production combines the title story with Numeroff’s other seasonal book, “Merry Christmas, Mouse!”
As the show opens on Christmas Eve, Numeroff’s famously bossy Mouse protagonist simply cannot wait to go to the movies. However, as patient Boy quickly learns, if you take a mouse to the movies on Christmas Eve, you get drawn into a never-ending series of holiday adventures. The two friends take a whirlwind trip through lots of seasonal fun, including finding and decorating the perfect Christmas tree, building a snowman and singing Christmas carols.
The production features only two main characters: the Mouse, played by Nicia Carla, and the Boy, played by Mark Sutton . With such a small cast, inventive, oversized scenery and props take center stage, especially since “If You Take a Mouse to the Movies” is designed for the large McColl Family Theatre.
“The scenery and props for this show function almost like another character, and the actors interact with their surroundings almost as much as they interact with each other,” says Artistic Director Alan Poindexter , who directs the production. “We are playing with scale, and with mixing two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects on stage to create a larger-than-life storybook feel. This production will be a true visual treat.”

’Tis the Season
Children’s Theatre’s Resident Touring Company, the Tarradiddle Players, bring a beloved favorite home for the holidays with “’Tis the Season”, running December 11-23 in the Wachovia Playhouse. This joyful holiday play celebrates the season with a collage of stories and songs from around the world. Creep softly with the Tomten who guards the farm in his native Sweden , even on the coldest and snowiest of nights. Travel southward with the sun, who keeps her promise to the trees to return in a haunting Cherokee solstice story. And climb into the sleigh with Mrs. Claus, who thinks that Christmas needs a little shaking up! With plenty of opportunities for audience participation, including a sing-along version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, this production is an engaging theatre experience for ages 3 and up.
