J*COMPANY’S ROCKING 60’S MUSICAL SOAP OPERA

The award-winning J*Company youth theatre continues its 12th season with the locally created smash hit, SUDS, on Thursday, December 9, 7:00 p.m. in the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre, Potiker Family Arts and Culture Complex at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS. 

J*Company founding Artistic Director Becky Cherlin has assembled a top-notch creative team to collaborate on this first youth theatre production of SUDS. Staging and choreography for SUDS was created by Mark Stevens and is based on the original choreography of San Diego Ballet’s Javier Velasco. Well known San Diego musician and songwriter, Rayme Sciaroni is musical director of the production. The four-person teen cast includes: Kari Campbell, Dorothy Guthrie, Michelle Geffen and Adam Covalt. 

Set in a Laundromat in the 60’s, SUDS tells the story of a broken hearted girl who is desperate to commit “suicide by speed-cycle.” Her hilarious efforts are thwarted by three rockin’ guardian angels that turn her world upside down. SUDS, featuring over 50 classic rock songs including; Please, Mr. Postman, It’s My Party and The Locomotion, is a celebration of the music that defined an era and thrilled a generation. The J*Company’s unique staging of SUDS and a “special dessert event” at the Saturday evening performance make this production of SUDS even more exceptional. Directed by founding Artistic Director Becky Cherlin and Managing Director Patrick Stewart, the J*Company has won numerous awards including: “Best Production,” Best Ensemble,” “Best Lead Actor,” and “Best Lead Actress” by San Diego Playbill. In its 12th season, the J*Company is a Broadway style musical theatre and serves the entire San Diego youth community.

J*Company was recently honored by the Honorable Dick Murphy, Mayor of San Diego proclaiming Sunday, October 24, 2004, official J*Company Youth Theatre Day in San Diego.
